Predictions are most accurate for similar distances
Riegel's formula works best when predicting a distance reasonably close to your known result. Predicting a marathon time from a 1-mile time trial is far less reliable than predicting it from a half marathon result.
Use a race result, not just a training run
Race-day adrenaline, competition, and taper typically produce a truer maximal effort than a solo training run. If using a training time, make sure it was a genuine hard effort.
Longer-distance predictions assume adequate endurance training
The formula assumes you've done distance-appropriate training. A fast 5K runner with no long runs will likely underperform their predicted marathon time due to endurance limits, not pacing.
Conditions affect real results more than the formula accounts for
Heat, hills, wind, and race-day nerves can all cause actual times to differ from the prediction. Treat the output as a strong starting estimate, not a guarantee.

The Riegel formula was developed by Pete Riegel ("Athletic Records and Human Endurance," American Scientist, 1981) from analysis of world-record and elite performance data across distances, and remains one of the most widely cited race-time prediction models in running and exercise science literature. The 1.06 exponent reflects the empirically observed rate at which pace slows as race distance increases.

How to Interpret Your Result
The predicted times show what you might realistically run at other distances if you trained and paced appropriately for each. They are projections based on a mathematical relationship, not guarantees — actual results depend heavily on distance-specific training, pacing execution, and race-day conditions.

It's most useful when your known result is a genuine, recent maximal effort at a comparable distance to the one you're predicting.
Limitations
Riegel's formula assumes consistent training and pacing ability across distances, which doesn't hold for runners who specialize heavily in one distance without building the endurance base for longer ones. It also doesn't account for course terrain, weather, altitude, or race-day variables like nutrition and pacing execution.
Predictions become less reliable the further apart the known and target distances are — predicting a marathon from a mile time is far less reliable than predicting a 10K from a 5K time.
