Steps to Miles

This calculator converts a step count — from your phone, smartwatch, or pedometer — into an estimated walking distance in miles and kilometers. It estimates your stride length from your height and sex using commonly cited walking-stride formulas, then multiplies by your step count. For a more personal estimate, measure your own stride length by counting steps over a known distance (like a 100-meter track) and entering the result manually where supported.

Walk 10 steps at a normal pace, measure the total distance in feet, and divide by 10. This personal stride length is more accurate than the height-based estimate, especially if you have an unusually long or short stride for your height.

Stride length shortens with age and slower walking

A relaxed stroll produces a shorter stride than a brisk walk. If you're converting a casual walk, your actual distance may be slightly less than this calculator estimates.

Running stride is longer than walking stride

This calculator uses walking-stride formulas. If most of your tracked steps come from running, your actual distance will likely be greater than this estimate, since running strides are typically 30–50% longer.

The popular 10,000-step target translates to about 4.5–5 miles for an average-height adult, or roughly 7–8 km. Shorter individuals will need more steps to cover the same distance.

Phone step counts can undercount during pushing or carrying

Phone-based step counters rely on arm-swing motion. Pushing a stroller, carrying groceries, or using a cane can reduce recorded steps even though you covered real distance — device-worn trackers (wrist or hip) are generally more accurate for this reason.

Steps alone don't account for incline or terrain. A hilly hike at the same step count as a flat walk represents meaningfully more effort — distance combined with elevation gives a fuller picture.

How to Interpret Your Result

The result estimates the walking distance represented by your step count, using your height and sex to approximate stride length. It is a population-level estimate, not a measurement of your individual stride.

If your device or app reports a different distance, that's expected — devices calibrate stride length differently, some using GPS-corrected values that adapt to your actual walking data over time.

When to Use This Tool

Use this calculator when you want to translate a step count into a more intuitive distance figure, for daily goal-setting, route planning, or comparing activity across devices that report steps versus distance differently.

It is not a substitute for GPS-based distance tracking when precision matters, such as training for a specific race distance.
